Public Viewing

Eating may be shown publicly to audiences of any size, including broadcast audiences, for non-profit educational purposes. In fact, we encourage those who have seen the film to approach their public access, PBS or other television stations and ask them to show it. Eating is currently being shown on many stations throughout the country.

Eating may NOT be shown over the Internet or within intranets.

Eating may be shown in whole or in part, but may not be duplicated in whole or in part, edited, transformed, altered, built upon or made part of another presentation, without the express written permission of the copyright holder.

Reactions

This is part of an email we received which describes a showing of Eating, which may be helpful to those wanting to put on a show.

"WOW! It was unbelievable! We had over 100 people show up to our fundraiser. After the film was over, about 30 people stayed around and talked and asked questions and ate free samples of fake meats and soy/ice/almond milks, etc...that had been donated by our local grocery stores. Before the movie, I decided not to put out handouts and books. I did it during the film, so that when people came out, they came on to the resource table where we had our cook books and our table full of free literature. There was SO MUCH excitement and energy in the theater lobby area. It felt like we changed a lot of lives and a lot of diets. It was enormously successful. Andy helped me and my students set up and break down, and he was also very engaged in talking to people and answering questions. He thought it was incredible! It is a great film to see on a big screen."

Why Isn't Eating on YouTube?

There are many reasons, but the number one reason is that the internet is an extremely poor method of conveying this message when the normal attention-span of internet users is about five minutes. In fact, pirated copies of the film were on YouTube and Google for over six months. When we looked at the statistics, we saw there was not a big volume of viewers looking at the first segment of the film in the first place. Then there was a radical drop-off of viewing with each successive segment, which only confirmed the attention-span problem.

Margaret Mead has said "It's easier to change a man's religion than his diet." In other words, this is a very difficult message to get across and we need the full attention of an audience. The internet simply does not provide that.

As stated at the top of this page, we allow people to screen Eating, free of charge, and that includes broadcast television. Eating has been shown in literally hundreds of small viewing rooms, hundreds of theaters and hundreds of public access stations across the country and throughout the world. We allow this because these are the best and most effective venues for this message. It takes work to spread the message and persuade people to change their eating habits. If you really want to help get this message out, invest some of your own time and put together a screening or show it on your local public access station.

Another important reason why we do not allow it on the internet is that if someone can see it there, why would they pay for it? In fact, the hard reality is that we have costs associated with getting this message out, including overhead, the support we provide people regarding dietary issues and advertising costs. We also have legal agreements with distributors, resellers and musicians. Showing this on the internet would undercut those agreements. Parenthetically, the revenue from the Eating DVD and the Rave Diet & Lifestyle book allowed us to produce Healing Cancer From Inside Out.

We have no benefactors and the only revenue stream which allows us to keep going comes from sales. Putting it on the internet is not only ineffective, but undercuts this revenue stream and threatens the viability of the entire project. In an age of sound-bites, we need to spend more time with people to persuade them to change their eating habits. The internet simply does not provide that time.
