Death by Veganism? An Op-Ed article was printed in the New York Times on May 21st, 2007, about which I received quite a bit of email. The article can be read here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/21/opinion/21planck.html?_r=1&oref=slogin I was asked to send a reply to the Times, which I did. Unfortunately, the reply was limited to just 150 words, and I thought you should read it.
To the Editors: In her article, Death by Veganism, Ms. Plank totally misrepresents the case of the Atlanta couple. Chuck Boring, the prosecutor in the case, stated the baby died of starvation, not of what he was fed. He said, "The child died because he was not fed. Period." This was a simple case of child neglect, not nutritional insufficiency. To blame a child's death on any diet is a gross simplification of the facts. Dr. Benjamin Spock, who knows a thing or two about babies, recommended a diet of no animal products in the 7th edition of his book, Baby and Child Care. I happen to personally know of dozens of children who were raised from birth on a vegan diet who are now thriving far better than their peers, including those raised on 100% raw vegan diets.

The article in the Times is pure propaganda and full of misrepresentations and inaccuracies. The Atlanta couple were trying to blame their child's death on a vegan diet in order to escape punishment for starving their child to death.
